Trees, Nature and Wellbeing Poster Competition
Pupils’ Passion For Protecting Trees and Nature
Damn Cheek Production’s compelling, thought provoking and immersive performances of Passion for the Planet, which took place last Autumn at the Friends Meeting House in Butter Hill, Dorking, invited involvement and interaction from local schools.
As a continuation of this collaborative approach to raising awareness about environmental issues, pupils attending primary and secondary schools in and around Dorking were recently invited to take part in a Trees, Nature and Wellbeing poster competition.
Organised by Circular Dorking, the competition is a Passion for the Planet legacy project and it also links with Circular Dorking’s celebrations of Great Big Green Week last month.
The brief was to design a poster about looking after our trees and nature, essential action which is good not only for our wellbeing but for that of the planet too.
The competition attracted a fantastic total of 71 entries, featuring the work of 76 students, with inspirational messages and creativity in abundance! St Paul’s, Surrey Hills, Greville and Therfield schools all took part in the poster competition.
A legacy book featuring all the competition entries has been produced and can be viewed here.
Judging will take place early August where a panel of local artists and a tree expert will select a shortlist of six winning posters and one overall winner.
Students whose poster made it to the shortlist will each receive a book and a certificate when they return to school in September. The overall winner will also receive a voucher along with their book and certificate.
The books being awarded as prizes all feature on a special conservation and sustainability reading list put together for local primary and secondary schools by Heath Educational Books. You can view the book selections by visiting our School books page.
Wendy Saunders from Circular Dorking commented:
The Trees, Nature and Wellbeing posters can be viewed at Dorking Library from now in to early September. If you visit the Library before the end of August you will can also view The Remarkable World of Trees Exhibition. A collaboration between the Surrey Tree Warden Network, the Tree Council, creator Kate Bretherton and Surrey Libraries, this exhibition explores the world of trees from the soil they grow in, to the insects, birds, and animals that call them home.
Tying in with the Circular Dorking poster competition, visitors will discover lots of ideas on how to help trees, hedgerows and our whole environment. The exhibition includes collaborative artwork, a photographic display, author talks and book signings, interactive art and craft workshops and activities for children.
