Damn Cheek – be part of an exciting Community Project

Step into history. Find your voice. Be part of something extraordinary.

Are you curious about the stories hidden in our landscape? Do you want to perform, connect, and create something powerful with others in your community?

What if theatre wasn’t just something you watched — but something you belonged to?

We’re inviting people from across the community to come together to create a bold, site-specific performance rooted in our shared history, landscape, and voices.

In 1938, Ralph Vaughan Williams and E. M. Forster created England’s Pleasant Land — a sweeping, poetic journey through 1,000 years of land, power, and people. Performed once in Surrey, it then disappeared for over 80 years.

Now, Damn Cheek Productions, in collaboration with the National Trust, is bringing the concept back to life at Leith Hill Place — Vaughan Williams’ childhood home.

This isn’t a revival. It’s a reimagining — shaped by the people who take part.

We’re looking for community performers of all ages and experience levels to join us in creating this unique performance in early October. Whether you’ve been on stage before or never tried it, your voice matters here.

You can also get involved behind the scenes through creative, technical, and support roles, or take part in mentoring opportunities, working alongside professional artists and helping others grow in confidence and skills.

This is about the coming together of local people to tell a story rooted in this place — sharing ideas, trying something new, and creating something to be proud of.

Together, we’ll explore a question that still resonates today: who does the countryside really belong to?

The journey begins with a gentle, relaxed and exploratory workshop in July, followed by Saturday rehearsals throughout September, leading to performances on 3rd–4th October.

Whether you want to be on stage, behind the scenes, or supporting others — there’s a place for you here.
