Eco Hub • Celebrating Schools Environmental Achievements Talk

Hot on the heels of a blustery, rainy and sunny week came a wonderful,

…welcoming Eco Hub, complete with refreshments and plenty of crafts and children’s activities.  Disappointingly we had a bit of a drop in numbers – maybe around 20 people (adults and children) in all. This reminded us that publicity is still a task we need to broaden out in.  

However the talk by Wendy Saunders then illustrated how fortunate the Eco Hub is to be partnered with Circular Dorking, whose key words are ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repeat’.  With the support of Surrey County Council, Wendy and Circular Dorking colleagues approached Dorking schools and other Surrey schools to ask them to participate in a celebratory event, not a competition.  Schools were invited to make a poster that showed their three biggest environmental achievements. 

The finished posters from 11 schools (10 primary, one secondary) in total are now on display in Dorking Library until 21 November. The range of posters submitted shows it’s never too early to start the conversation about how we can each play our part in protecting our planet. But in addition to this we learnt how much the schools do already with mentions of the School’s Eco Award scheme, as well as an Eco Club in the secondary school, an Eco Council in one primary school, eco warriors in a local primary school and the Eco Schools Green Flag award.

 It was a joy to me, as a teacher, to see how much awareness (of what we can do for the environment) is being raised with children at an early age and even fitted in in the secondary school.  This is not only in looking after the immediate environment e.g. green travel, litter picking, recycling… but also in growing plants and trees and caring for nature, waterways and the ocean.
