Schools Trees, Nature & Wellbeing Poster Competition
A Passion for the Planet Legacy Project
As a thank you for getting involved last autumn with ‘Passion for the Planet”, Circular Dorking is inviting schools to participate in a poster competition as part of the forthcoming ‘Big Green Week’ (June 2024).
We are hoping that schools will get to raise student awareness of environmental issues and have fun being involved in a community project.
A poster has been sent to schools to help teachers introduce the competition and display in their classrooms.
The details sent out to school were as follows:
There is no limit on the number of entries a school may make, however individual students can only submit one.
There are two categories: (i) primary schools & (ii) secondary schools.
The judges will be local artists.
Posters can be A4 or A3 in size.
The winning posters will be on display in Dorking Library during the summer holidays.
The winning artists will be able to choose books as prizes from the book lists on the Circular Dorking schools webpage (see website address above).
On the back of each poster please include the following information: (a) name of pupil; (b) class name; & (c) name of the school.
The deadline for entries is Friday 28th June.
To keep things simple, we would ask that all entries are available for collection in the school reception on Monday 1st July from 10am onwards.
The Exhibition
The competition attracted a fantastic total of 71 entries, featuring the work of 76 students, with inspirational messages and creativity in abundance! St Paul’s, Surrey Hills, Greville and Therfield schools all took part in the poster competition.
The Trees, Nature and Wellbeing posters can be viewed at Dorking Library from now in to early September. If you visit the Library before the end of August you will can also view The Remarkable World of Trees Exhibition. A collaboration between the Surrey Tree Warden Network, the Tree Council, creator Kate Bretherton and Surrey Libraries, this exhibition explores the world of trees from the soil they grow in, to the insects, birds, and animals that call them home.
Tying in with the Circular Dorking poster competition, visitors will discover lots of ideas on how to help trees, hedgerows and our whole environment. The exhibition includes collaborative artwork, a photographic display, author talks and book signings, interactive art and craft workshops and activities for children.
A legacy book featuring all the competition entries has been produced and is available to view at the library and online on our Schools page.
Judging will took place early August where a panel of local artists and a tree expert will select a shortlist of winning posters, highly commended and two overall winners.
Prizes of Posters, Books and Tree Study Guides will be awarded to the prize winners in School Assemblies.

Event at the Library
The project culminated in an Event at Dorking Library where a cross section of people, businesses and organisations were able to view the children’s incredible work.
