£2m of Free Energy Jobs Training

Opportunities to re-skill in the energy sector for individuals and business

Surrey is desperately short of the skills needed to transition to a low carbon future. The good news is that Surrey and Hampshire County Councils now have fully and partially funded places for a wide range of training opportunities to tackle this deficit of skills.

Almost £3m in Government funding has been secured either through Hampshire and Surrey’s Skills Bootcamp, or via partner the Retrofit Academy. Courses in all of the following are available, with some requiring no previous experience in the energy sector:

  • Heat pump installation and maintenance (for existing plumbing & heating engineers)
  • Combined Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit/ Level 3 Award in Domestic Retrofit Advice
  • Combined Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Energy Assessment/ Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment
  • Level 4 Award in Domestic Retrofit Assessment (must have done L3)
  • Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination & Risk Management

More information for Business

Lack of people with the right skills has been one of the major barriers to the expansion of retrofit. Surrey and Hampshire County Councils are delighted to announce that that are two immediate free or majority-funded retrofit skills training opportunities available:

Our partner The Retrofit Academy (TRA) has been awarded £1 million of funding from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to offer retrofit training and qualifications in England, to help upskill workers. Training is mainly for retrofit assessors and coordinators. Fully-funded places are available for those who are unemployed, with part funding available for those already in jobs. Everyone who works for a company which has a registered address in England you will be eligible to apply.

Skills Bootcamps provide flexible training for ‘in demand’ sectors. Surrey and Hampshire County Councils have collaborated to secure £1.8m of funding, with around 200 places available for retrofit assessors/coordinators and heat pump installers. Bootcamps are available either for people looking to move sectors or progress within their existing company. Training is free to participants, with employers contributing a small proportion of costs where Bootcamps are used to upskill existing employees. Businesses are key to Bootcamp delivery, with participants completing the training offered a guaranteed interview to support their progression.
